Seldovia Alaska Halibut Fishing Lodging is located just a stones throw across Kachemak Bay from the mainland and a 16 mile boat or plane ride from Homer Alaska, Seldovia rests in the shelter of one of Alaska's premier wilderness bays. Seldovia's waterfront location opens up many recreational adventures.
Alaska’s
first state park, and only wilderness park, contains roughly 400,000 acres of mountains,
glaciers, forests and ocean. Highlighted by constantly changing weather patterns,
the park’s outstanding scenery is a backdrop for first-rate recreation and
vacation prospects. Visitors to Alaska TreeTops Lodging will find opportunities
for fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, camping, wildlife viewing and mountain
sports.
Kachemak
Bay is home to many species of marine life. Lodging guests frequently observe sea
otters, seals, porpoise and whales both from shore and from watercraft. Tidal pools
offer natural settings for marine life viewing and studies. Land mammals include
moose, black bear, mountain goats, coyotes and wolves. The many species of birds
that inhabit the bay, including eagles, falcons and puffins, making Kachemak Bay
a popular area for bird watching.
Every
spring, a tremendous migration of shorebirds occurs in the Kachemak Bay area. Kachemak
Bay is one of the richest areas inside North America for resident and seasonal
shorebirds, surf birds, seabirds and waterfowl, with over 230 species spending
significant time in the Bay area. Many of these shorebirds depend upon the vast
marine invertebrates for food, and Kachemak Bay is recognized as one of the most
productive environments in Alaska for mollusks and other marine life.
The
secret to this richness lies in the extreme changes in Kachemak Bay tides. These
tides can vary as much as 28 feet during a short six-hour period. The extremes
within these tides help to create the protective gravel bars and spits that favor
the formation of biologically rich and productive coastal tide pools. Incoming
tides push clear nutrient-rich water from upwelling in the Gulf of Alaska into
the south side of the Bay, and outgoing tides draw sediment-loaded freshwater from
the inner and northern part of the bay. These areas where salt and fresh water
meet are called “estuaries. Among the most productive environments on earth,
estuaries such as Seldovia Bay also provide the important nursery habitat for a
wide diversity of marine life.
The
fertility of Kachemak Bay has led to a number of other protective measures for
the area. Kachemak Bay State Park includes much of the rugged fjords, lush coastal
forests, alpine tundra, and glaciers on the south side of the Kachemak Bay. In
1996, Kachemak Bay was dedicated as part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve
Network, and more recently the Bay was designated a National Estuarine Research
Reserve. These protective designations are a testament to the commitment and concern
of the residents of the area, who recognize the importance of preserving a healthy
environment in Kachemak Bay.
